47th Division had been involved in heavy fighting on the Somme during September and early October, 1916, but by the end of October they had moved north and now found themselves holding the line in the southern part of the Ypres salient. On 8th November, 18th London of 141 Brigade, left their reserve positions at Vlamertinghe and moved into the front line trenches in the Ypres left sub-sector where they stayed until relieved on 18th November. William Vidler was killed on 21st November by which time 18th London had moved back by train from Ypres into reserve. The most likely explanation for his death is that he was temporarily attached to another unit and was still near the front line on this date. Alternatively his death may have been recorded on the wrong day. |
